From Bayero University Kano to Erasmus Mundus Master in Europe
Reflecting on my path to the Erasmus Mundus Masters in BIOREF, I’m reminded of how pivotal moments, mentorship, and intentional choices shaped this journey.
The Spark 🔥
During my undergrad at Bayero University Kano, a transformative webinar and the success of seniors in my department ignited my ambition to pursue advanced studies. Later, a friend introduced me to the NES (Northern Elite Scholars) Mentorship platform, while a senior colleague at Khalifa University (UAE) became a steady guide.
The Turning Point ⏳
Days after completing NYSC camp in Yola, I faced a tough choice: return to Kano or fight to stay at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) for NYSC. I chose AUN—a decision that granted me 24/7 office access, stable power, and internet, critical for applications. Though surviving on ₦33k monthly meant sacrificing side hustles and comforts, it was worth it.
The Power of Mentorship 🤝
A life-changing call with Yakubu Hamza (thank you!) shifted everything. He reviewed my CV, recommended programs that aligned with my experience, and affirmed, “Bro, you have a good profile—soon you’ll be in Europe, In Sha Allah.” Later, my mentor at Khalifa University reviewed my countless documents. When I shared my BIOREF SOP, his response was golden: “This is very okay. Prepare for interviews—you’ll get it, In Sha Allah.”
Lessons Learned 💡
- Mentorship matters: The right guidance unlocks clarity and confidence.
- Sacrifice fuels growth: Prioritizing long-term goals over short-term gains is hard but rewarding.
- Environment shapes opportunity: AUN’s resources were instrumental—choose spaces that nurture your aspirations.

To those on their own journeys: Stay focused, seek mentorship, and embrace the grind—it pays off!
